Some dogs come into your life exactly when you need them most, and Gracie certainly did.
When I first met her, I wasn't looking for another dog. A family needed to surrender their two-year-old dog because of a move, and I agreed to foster her temporarily while they searched for a permanent home. At the time, I already had two cats and another dog, so I thought I was simply helping during a transition. But there was something about Gracie's sweet eyes that immediately drew me in. She settled into our home effortlessly, blending right into our little crew as though she had always belonged there. What was supposed to be a temporary arrangement slowly became something much more permanent.
The final decision may have actually been made by my then-boyfriend, now husband, Chad. One night while he was dog-sitting for me, he let Gracie sleep in bed with him. From that moment on, she was completely devoted. Watching the relationship between the two of them develop made it impossible to imagine our lives without her. After a few weeks, we officially completed the adoption process, and in 2020, Gracie became ours.
Looking back, Gracie didn't just become part of our family, she helped shape it.
She is curious, affectionate, easygoing, and happiest when she's simply near the people she loves. She loves long walks, car rides, meeting new people, and being brushed. She'll happily let me dress her up alongside her “brother” Oliver. Whether she's meeting a stranger, another dog, or just about any animal she encounters, Gracie approaches the world as if everyone is already her friend. But what makes her truly special isn't what she does. It's how she loves.

After losing my brother, I found myself navigating some of the heaviest grief I have ever experienced. During those difficult days, Gracie became my constant companion. She seemed to understand every emotion without a word being spoken. When grief would arrive unexpectedly, she was there. She would rest her head in my lap, sit quietly beside me, or simply stay close enough to remind me I wasn't alone.
One memory stands out more than any other. I was sitting on the couch scrolling through old photos and memories on my phone when the sadness hit me hard. As I started crying, Gracie moved closer and sat on the floor beside me. A few moments later, she jumped onto the couch and nestled against me, resting her head gently on my chest.
There were countless moments like that. Whenever grief found me, somehow Gracie always seemed to know. That's why we started calling her our “Right Here Girl,” because no matter what was happening, she was always right where you needed her to be.

Over the years, our home has become a place of fostering and transition for animals in need. We've fostered dozens of cats and kittens, many of whom arrived frightened, unsure, and overwhelmed by their new surroundings. Gracie always seems to know exactly what they need. Whenever a new foster arrives, she gets excited and then almost immediately shifts into what I can only describe as a motherly role. She is playful but gentle, patient but protective. Tiny kittens climb all over her, curl up against her, and chase her wagging tail as it sweeps across the floor.
Watching her with our foster animals is one of my favorite things. Many of those animals eventually move into homes with other pets, and thanks to Gracie, they learn early on that dogs can be kind, safe companions. She helps build their confidence, comfort, and trust, giving them a better chance of thriving in their forever homes.
A year ago, Gracie stepped into perhaps her most important role yet: big sister. When our son Jameson was born, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but Gracie immediately embraced him as part of her family. She keeps a close eye on him and always seems to know where he is. She patiently allows him to climb over her, tug on her fur, and occasionally test the limits of her patience in ways only toddlers can. Through it all, she remains gentle, as though she understands that he's still learning.

Watching the two of them together has been one of the greatest joys of motherhood. Even now, as Gracie's beard grows a little grayer and she begins to slow down, I can already see the friendship that's forming between them. Motherhood has deepened my appreciation for the kind of home we want to create, one filled with kindness, compassion, safety, and love for every living thing that enters our lives. Gracie has been at the center of that lesson, teaching it every day without saying a word.
Of course, she isn't just loved by me. She is adored by Chad, who spoils her with endless hugs, pets, and her favorite thing in the world: booty scratches. She follows him around, leans against him whenever she gets the chance, and rests her head on his knee as if that's exactly where she belongs. She lights up whenever he's around, and the feeling is clearly mutual.
Over the years, we've collected countless nicknames for her: Triple G, Gracie Good Girl, Sweetie, Swamp Monster, and Booty Floof, just to name a few. No matter what we call her, she'll always be our Gracie.
If I could tell her one thing and know she fully understood it, I would tell her this: You changed me. You gave me memories I will carry for the rest of my life. You walked beside me through grief, love, heartbreak, healing, marriage, motherhood, and everything in between. You showed up on the best days and the hardest days. You loved me through every version of myself.
The truth is that a dog's life is never long enough, but what they leave behind lasts forever. Because of Gracie, I have a lifetime of moments that will always make me smile. For that, I will be grateful forever.
