Sometimes you publish a story and never fully know where it will land. Last September, Peekaboo introduced readers to James Lampkin, a Northwest Arkansas husband, father, Walmart associate and member of the Arkansas Army National Guard. In his own words, James shared a story about a desire to serve that he had carried for years and the path that eventually led him to put on the uniform.

Life had already begun moving forward when James first considered joining the military. He and his wife, Jocelyn, had started their family, his career in Bentonville was going well and the timing didn't seem right. But the desire never completely disappeared. Years later, nearing the age when his opportunity to enlist could have passed, James finally walked into an Army National Guard recruiter's office and made the decision to serve. He was 33 years old.

At the time, it was a story about James. We now know it became part of someone else's story, too.

Matthew Stevens had carried a similar dream for most of his life. "I've wanted to join the National Guard or some form of the Army since as young as I can remember," Matthew shared in a recent video documenting his oath of enlistment. "It's always been that dream to serve my country."

But, like James, life happened. Matthew raised a family, built a career and found other ways to serve. Eventually, he says, the dream of military service began to feel less and less possible. "I started to give up on it," he said.

Then he read an article someone had shared. It was James's story in Peekaboo.

Matthew remembers reading it and realizing that maybe the opportunity he thought had passed him by hadn't disappeared after all. "It just kind of hit me that... maybe it's not too late," he said. "I don't have to give up on this dream."

And he didn't.

In a moment that brings the story full circle, James was there when Matthew officially took his oath of enlistment. James says he immediately recognized the similarities between their paths. Both men had spent years building careers, both had families and responsibilities to consider, and both eventually chose to step away from the familiar and put on the uniform.

"It means a lot for me to be able to stand there with him and administer the oath of enlistment," James shared.

Last year, James wrote in these pages that a hometown hero isn't someone looking for recognition. It's someone who shows up, serves and sets an example others can follow. A year later, we get to see just how far that example can reach.

For Peekaboo, it is an honor to have played even a small part in connecting these two stories. We believe deeply in the power of sharing the people, experiences and stories that make up our community, but moments like this are a reminder that sometimes a story does more than simply introduce us to someone. Sometimes it reaches the right person at exactly the right time.

One man's decision to finally pursue a lifelong calling became a story. That story reached another man who thought his own opportunity had passed.

And this time, the story didn't end on the page.

It helped begin another one.
